Bold or bonkers? A look at some trends that the majority of people will be scared of trying due to having bad taste connotations. Are they bold and beautiful, or are they tacky and bonkers. Are they of bad taste? What do we classify as bad taste and is some 'good taste' in actual fact bad?
Models at Marques' Almeida, top, had lashings of white mascara applied to their eyes, whilst at Temperley, bottom, models' eye sockets were adorned with glitter and sequins. London Fashion Week saw some new looks emerge on the catwalk. The bold eye looks were presented with not much else on the face, which lead them to look a little out of place and random.
The striking look it gave the models was definitely effective, giving them a more than focused face for the runway ahead. We all know that the fashion displayed on runways doesn't come through to walking down the street fashion, but one element that does transfer, for the most part at least is the makeup looks presented. White mascara, why not?
One look that has been shown on the runway and that has become a real trend, with YouTube tutorials backing it, has been unusual/unnatural eyebrows. In recent months girls and guys alike have been sporting these wacky coloured brows, and 9 times out of 10 pulling it off! In recent years we have seen bleached eyebrows hitting the runway as well as the red carpet, with Kim Kardashian arguably being the most memorable for it for the Met Gala 2016. The coloured eyebrows are easily achievable just taking your favourite high pigmented eyeshadow shade with your regular eyebrow brush, and filling them in as you normally would.
This trend follows from previous ones like, brightly coloured eyeliner and mascara. All of these have bright colours in common. Have we been programmed into thinking that brightly coloured makeup, or even clothing is to be steered clear from. What if the crazy thing to do was to walk down the street with black mascara and a neutral smokey eye? Why has bright colours been paired with bad taste, is it because it's loud and in your face so you automatically head to thinking that the wearer of such fashion is the same on the inside? Maybe they are expressive. And what's wrong about that. If your having a down day, apply your darker more socially acceptable makeup, but if it's happy your feeling then it's bright eyeliner for you. So what we've really concluded is that the average colours that people where lack expression and are quite frankly dull. Maybe the bad taste choice in this is the full and boring neutral makeup, because everyone's done that, so is your taste truly yours when everyone else has the same. Be bold.
Nicki Minaj when she first became well known back in 2010, she was definitely classed as having bad taste. It is actually disappointing to see that in the last two years, she has mellowed in her fashion and makeup choices. Is this due to bad press such as articles in Huffington Post like ''Nicki Minaj's Style Gimmick And 15 More Worst-Dressed Stars This Week". If this is the case of why she has become a Kim K Klone, then her style now is more kitsch than ever.
